Naar aanleiding van afscheid: Top 5 goals Steven Gerrard

Liverpool-legende Steven Gerrard heeft aangegeven dat hij officieel stopt als profvoetballer. De carrière van Gerrard heeft in totaal negentien jaar geduurd, waarin hij 860 wedstrijden speelde. De middenvelder maakte in die 860 wedstrijden 212 doelpunten en hij wist 11 prijzen met Liverpool te pakken. De mooiste prijs die hij met 'zijn' Liverpool wist te pakken was de Champions League in 2005 ten kost van AC Milan. Liverpool wist in die wedstrijd terug te komen van een 3-0 achterstand, mede door een goal van Gerrard. Het enige smetje op zijn carrière is de Premier League die hij nooit wist te winnen. Toch is er reden genoeg om de vijf mooiste doelpunten van Gerrard even op een rijtje te zetten.

5. Manchester City-Liverpool / 3 februari 2013

Niet de belangrijkste goal uit zijn carrière, maar tegen grootmacht Manchester City weet Gerrard de bal schitterend in het doel te schieten. Met zijn kenmerkende manier van schieten passeert hij Joe Hart op een fenomenale manier.

4. Liverpool-Middlesbrough / 30 april 2005

Wederom een geweldige pegel van Gerrard. Hij laat de bal nog één keer stuiteren voor hij hem vol op zijn pantoffel neemt. De bal belandt prachtig in de kruising.

3. Liverpool-Olympiakos / 8 december 2004

Liverpool moest met twee doelpunten verschil van Olympiakos winnen om door te gaan in de Champions League tijdens het seizoen 2004/05. Vijf minuten voor het einde staat Liverpool met 2-1 voor, dus er moet gescoord worden. Gerrard krijgt de bal en doet dan dit!

2. Liverpool-West Ham United / 13 mei 2006

Wederom een doelpunt van Gerrard laat in de wedstrijd. In de FA-cup finale van 2006 staat Liverpool in de 90e minuut met 3-2 achter. De bal stuitert voor de voet van de Engelsman en hij scoort wederom op een schitterende manier. Er volgt een verlenging en strafschoppenserie, waarin Liverpool aan het langste eind trekt.

1. Liverpool-AC Milan / 25 mei 2005

Liverpool staat in de finale van de Champions League op een kansloze 3-0 achterstand tegen AC Milan. De Italianen denken dat ze er al zijn, maar dan scoort Gerrard de 3-1. Vervolgens veroorzaakt hij ook de strafschop waar de 3-3 uitkomt. Hij wordt uitverkozen tot 'Man of the Match' en Liverpool weet de Champions League te winnen, onder aanvoering van Steven Gerrard.

Following recent media speculation surrounding my future I can confirm my retirement from playing professional football.I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy. I feel very fortunate to have had the career I've had but none of it would have been possible without the support of so many people. I am proud to have played for and captained Liverpool for so many years and to have achieved what we achieved during my time at the club. I was lucky to play alongside some great players and under some fantastic managers during my time at Anfield and would like to thank each and every one of them, as well as all of the backroom staff at the club for the fantastic support they showed me. I would like to say a special thank you to Steve Heighway, Dave Shannon and Hugh McAuley for believing in me when I was making my way at Liverpool and for giving me the platform to go on and fulfil my dreams. Thank you to the amazing fans of Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy for the incredible backing you have given me throughout my career. Your loyalty and support has meant the world. I would like to thank Struan Marshall, my agent throughout my career, and the team at Wasserman for all of their support over the past 18 years. I feel lucky to have had such a close group of friends that I have always been able to count and rely on throughout the course of my career. Thank you to all of you. Finally, the most important thank you; to my family. I cannot thank my Mum, Dad and brother Paul enough for their unconditional support over the years, it has meant everything to me. To my wife Alex and children Lily, Lexie and Lourdes, thank you for the constant love and support you’ve shown me. I am excited about the future and feel I still have a lot to offer the game. I am currently taking my time to consider a number of options and will make an announcement with regards to the next stage of my career very soon.
